AKF Martial Arts of Cache Valley

Class Descriptions

Kyuki-do classes are a requirement for rank in the American Kyuki-do Federation. The Kyuki-do class consists of instruction in all aspects of Kyuki-do, a comprehensive and versatile system of martial arts, self-defense and fitness. Students will learn all Tae Kwon-do basics (blocks, punches, kicks) and the AKF Forms which provide the foundation of Kyuki-do. Students will also receive instruction in basic Kyuki-do sparring and have the opportunity to learn the traditional hyung of the World Tae Kwon Ddo Federation (Tae Guek) and the International Tae Kwon Do Federation (Chon Ji).

Kyuki-do students receive basic weapons training and learn the traditional Judo throws, pins and falls, Hapki-do joint manipulations, grappling, one- and three-step sparring combinations, and self-defense techniques.

AKF Martial Arts offers three separate Kyuki-do classes:

  • Adult Kyuki-do classes are open to all students ages 14 years and older
  • Junior Kyuki-do classes are open to all students ages 7 to 13
  • Little Tigers, a modified Kyuki-do class open to students ages 5 to 6

Adult students wishing to pursue additional training and excellence in ground fighting and sparring are encouraged to attend the adult sparring and judo classes. These classes are offered to all adult students of AKF Martial Arts at no additional charge.

Olympic Style Taekwondo Sparring Class

This class emphasizes training in all Tae Kwon Do sparring techniques and encourages students to pursue excellence in Olympic Style Tae Kwon Do sparring. Students in this class will have the opportunity to spar a lot! This class offers specialized training in sparring fitness and Tae Kwon Do sparring rules. Attending this class will enable students to participate in local Tae Kwon Do tournaments including the annual Utah Summer Games, an Olympic qualifying event. This class is included in the regular adult student tuition and is open to adult students of any rank. This class is also available separately to students who are ranked in a recognized Tae Kwon Do federation other than the AKF. Students taking this class must possess their own sparring gear and chest protector.

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Martial art that emphasizing powerful kicks and strong punching techniques. Tae Kwon Do literally means “the way of the foot and fist.” It ranks as the world’s most popular Martial Art in number of participants.

Under WTF (World Tae Kwon Do Federation) and Olympic rules, sparring is a full-contact event that takes place between two competitors in an area measuring 10 meters square. Each match consists of three semi-continuous rounds of contact with a rest between rounds. Each round is two minutes in length with a one-minute rest. Points are awarded for accurate and powerful techniques to the legal scoring areas; in Olympic style sparring points are not awarded for light contact to legal scoring areas. The awarding of points encourages controlled, high kicks. A kick or punch to the opponent's chest gear scores 1 point while a kick to the head scores 2 points. No punches to the head are permitted in Olympic style sparring.

Sparring rules typical of open tournament and invitational competition differ from the Olympic-style rules that will be emphasized in this class. Students will receive instruction in open tournament style sparring. Local tournaments often have modified rules that limit contact or legal scoring areas. Students preparing for tournament competition will also receive specific instruction in rules appropriate for the tournament.
